A teacher and leader at heart, she started working her first job as a math tutor at age 9, having an early jumpstart to her journey of self-discovery, skill development, and social impact. A powerhouse, Dr. Shy is a scholar, social scientist, spiritualist, entrepreneur, investor, and lifestyle connoisseur who has always lived life on her own terms, even when she was too naïve to realize or embrace it. Throughout her journey, Dr. Shy has taught, mentored, advised, and trained countless people in the areas of academia, business, career growth, personal development, and beyond. Professional. Dr. Shy's multi-decade professional career started when she became a math tutor at age 9, and it spans the technology industry, academia, nonprofit, federal government, private sector, and entrepreneurship. During her teenage years, she worked in customer service, retail, nonprofit, and administration. While studying as a full-time student in college, she simultaneously worked as a research assistant at a university and then in federal government. Her research path continued through graduate school and beyond. She was admitted to the Ph.D. program directly after earning her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Criminal Justice (with honors) with a minor in Psychology. During her time as a doctoral student, she worked as a research assistant and then a principal investigator leading her own research studies while teaching university-level courses. She earned her Ph.D. in criminology and criminal justice in 2016 then immediately started her career as a tenure-track professor in criminology and criminal justice at Indiana University before transitioning to Northeastern University and then Georgia State University where she retired early from her academic career. Dr. Shy eventually translated her advanced research experiences from academia to a research role in the technology industry at one of the world’s largest technology companies (a FAANG company). In addition to her academic credentials, Dr. Shy holds professional licenses as a cosmetologist (since 2007) and real estate agent (since 2018). She is excited to share her expertise in: career advancement and transitions, navigating workplaces, employment applications, graduate school and college applications, effective résumés and CVs, and salary negotiation.

 

Scholar. A teacher her whole life and a social scientist of 14 years, Dr. Shy earned her Ph.D. in criminology and criminal justice and became a tenure-track professor in 2016. She is a race criminologist with expertise in race relations, sociology, criminology, criminal justice, crime, and victimization. She employs quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methodologies in her research studies. She has been teaching at the university level for 11 years, including 7 years as a tenure-track professor. Moreover, Dr. Shy is a published author with a scholarly record that boasts of nearly 20 peer-reviewed publications in top academic journals and $2 million in awarded grants from prestigious funders. As a professor, her service has included advising criminal justice policymakers and decision makers, including police chiefs and probation and parole leaders, and serving on university committees for graduate admissions and faculty hiring. She is excited to share her expertise in: navigating academia as a student and faculty member, the academic job market, academic writing and publishing, social science research, effective CVs, salary negotiation, and teaching approaches/pedagogy.

 

Entrepreneur & Investor. In addition to her professional and academic accomplishments, Dr. Shy is an enthusiastic wealth builder through entrepreneurship and investing. She views wealth-building as a reparation for growing up in and experiencing intergenerational poverty and a means to breaking those generational patterns. A business owner of 9 years and an investor of 7 years, Dr. Shy owns The Self-Care Shoppe, an herbal and metaphysical store, and Essence Skincare, a natural skincare company. She also owns a real estate investing company and the property management company that manages her residential rental properties. Her real estate investing expertise is in long-term, buy-and-hold strategies with real estate investing experience that includes local and long distance: home buying, landlording, and property management. She earned her real estate license in 2018. In addition to real estate investing, Dr. Shy is a stock market and cryptocurrency investor with expertise in long-term, buy-and-hold strategies and technical/chart analysis. She is excited to share her expertise in: wealth mindset, wealth building, business startup, home buying, real estate investing, landlording, property management, and getting started with stock market investing.

 

Spiritualist. Dr. Shy credits her spiritual foundation and spiritual prowess for her ability to overcome challenges and earn achievements throughout her life. An advanced spiritualist, her spiritual practice is what she titles “Black Indigenous spirituality.” A gifted intuitive, manifestor, healer, and alchemist, She grew up in the Black Christian church but transitioned from mainstream religions nearly 14 years ago. Since then, Dr. Shy has been on her path of independent, eclectic spirituality that includes ancestral veneration, working with nature, and employing ancient spiritual practices, all which are informed by over a decade of studying and training under a wide diversity of spiritual systems and teachers. She is excited to share her expertise in: spiritual growth, spiritual sovereignty, manifesting, internal healing, and ancestral veneration as well as the basics of spiritual gifts, astrology, and magick.
